Chapter 28

Some commotion erupted when Eric and Caroline left, and some screaming when Frank made the bath water too hot, but Penny kept her head bent over her laptop in the living room. Frank wrestled Joshua and Jeremy into clean tee shirts since their pajamas were at the hotel and smeared some toothpaste across their teeth. The bathroom looked like the main deck of the Titanic after it hit the iceberg, but he could deal with that after they fell asleep. Soon the boys were snuggled beside Frank in the guest bedroom as he read aloud from their favorite Captain Underpants book.

Joshua’s eyes drooped, but Jeremy remained resolutely alert, demanding another chapter. Frank read on. The potty jokes that had been cute when he started were getting tiresome with repetition. Towards the end of the chapter, he noticed Jeremy was no longer giggling.

He stopped reading and waited.

No complaints.

Frank slid out of bed. Joshua stirred, but rolled over and stayed sleeping. Jeremy opened one eye. “Where are you going?”

“Across the hall to my bedroom. You stay under the covers with your brother.”

“I wanna nuther....” Jeremy’s eyelids fluttered and closed.

Frank slipped out of the guest bedroom. Whew!

He paused at the head of the stairs, drawn by the sound of Penny clacking away on her laptop. Going down to deliver the news that he’d successfully put the boys to bed without her help tempted him, but he figured he’d better not bother her. Frank entered their bedroom and stretched out, but watching TV up here was out of the question for fear of waking the boys. He reached for the book on his bedside table but found it difficult to transition from the antics of Smartsy-Fartsy and Super Diaper Baby to the life and times of Andrew Jackson. So he settled for scrolling through the news on his phone.

As he squinted through the latest political coverage, his phone rang. Quickly he answered before the sound woke the twins.

“Frank? It’s Bob. I’m sorry to bother you at home, but there’s someone up on the roof of the church. I’m not sure what to do.”

Frank sat up. “What? You mean someone’s trying to break into the church?”

“No. It’s a person—I think it’s a girl, but maybe a small man—crouching up near the steeple. After what happened to Laurel— ”

Frank sprang out of bed. The memory of Laurel poised on the bridge, reaching for the moon burned into his memory. “Is she trying to jump?”

“No, she seems to be hanging onto the side of the steeple, like she’s afraid of falling. I called up to her, but I’m afraid I’ll make the situation worse. I don’t know how she could’ve gotten up there.”

“I’ll be there in five minutes.”

Frank had his foot on the stairs when a tousled head popped out of the guest bedroom.

“Where are you going? I want another chapter. You promised.”

“We’ll read it in the morning. Grandpa’s gotta go out for a minute now. I need you to stay in bed.”

“No-o-o-o. You can’t leave us alone!”

“You’re not alone.
